TRADITIONAL CULTURE

SINGING AND XIMBOMBA SCHOOL

Within almost every culture, you will find people who, anonymously, express their likening of rhyme, popular poetry, and words which come from wittiness through their tongue. They are actually self-taught people who enjoy the process by which the glosa is created, its beauty and sonority.

This rich and creative world that has always been highly valued by the people of Mallorca is now menaced by, amongst many other things, the strength of mass media, especially television, which cast the audience towards poverty and rudeness in speech (and in mind, as speech and thought are intimately interlinked).

However, it has been said that “an illness which does not kill, will eventually bring remedy and cure”, so now, when everything seemed lost, a new generation of people has risen, seduced by the rhyming and singing with the ximbomba.

At Alcudia our association has created a singing with ximbomba school and right now a considerable group of young people is learning the genuine tune of our hometown. With this initiative we bring the uncertain situation of ximbomba singing in our town to an end: in recent years there was only half a dozen old singers left, who gathered round our association’s bonfire during Sant Antoni’s eve, and their number has grown with young voices. Biel Ferrerico, Venanci Llaneta, Joan Rialla, Maria Carbonera, Catalina and Jaume, the blanco brothers...are some of the veteran voices of our town. Among the young, we highlight Maria Polida, Jaume Poiet, Joan Nyany, Tomeu Polit, Carme de sa Cova, Maria Angels Nyanya, Joan Albert Cotona, Victòria Carbonera, Guillem Cotona...

Within today’s world of the glosa, it is of special praise the task carried out by the association Glosadors de Mallorca, and one of its main members, Felip Munar, which has consisted in the recovery of glosat improvitzat (glosadors duels). Among the newest glosadors, Mateu Xurí stands out of his own achievement, but Alcúdia also contributes with a voice to this field: Toni Mostel, who is father to two members of our association.
